Go ahead, you tell him you didn’t do your homework.
In our second podcast, Mike and Casey are joined by actual, real life teacher Rebecca Friedman for a very educational episode that highlights one of Schwarzenegger’s most successful comedies: 1990’s Kindergarten Cop!
Detective John Kimble is the meanest cop around. He really likes pushing people through glass coffee tables and blasting their couches with shotguns. So when Kimble needs to catch a vicious drug lord, he’s forced to go undercover. As a substitute kindergarten teacher.
He does know he’s not allowed to kill people, right?

Hey kelvin: how do you usually get info about RvM? I’ve got some ideas I can run by mike.
Love this film, especially as someone who grew up around teachers (father, mother, aunt). It’s not a realistic portrayal of teaching (few movies are); but, it is charming as all heck, a bit violent, and silly, to boot. It was the film, for me, that showed Arnold could do something a bit more challenging and smarter material (not that things like Terminator were dumb).
I would comment on something Rebecca talked about. Yes, teachers are required, by law, to report suspicions and evidence of child abuse (rightfully so); but, my father was of the era when a teacher would have been commended for taking a shot at the abusive father. No, violence doesn’t solve things and taking the law into your own hands usually creates more problems than it solves; but, it felt like justice, in the scene. I’m just old-fashioned enough to enjoy seeing the guy get his. I’m right there with Linda Hunt.
You could do this movie with another actor, though you would have to change specific scenes; but, you shouldn’t even think about doing it without Pamela Reed. She really makes the comedic stuff even better, even with the hokey attempt at Arnold’s accent.
I loved Becky schooling you with Arnold-knowledge in the pre-Podcasta la Vista episode, and this is a solid follow-up.
This was also a good demonstration of the “parent, no children, and works with children” team.
