We continue our chat with Kit Laika and Joe Preti, and veer into stories about strange liberties taken during menial high school jobs — and the potential spy thriller plots that can result from them.
We talk about the comics we love, swap nerd stories and the joy of pop culture recommendation. Mike finally takes his comic book fandom into the world of manga, and we might have just invented a very specific baseball fetish.
Plus, Joe really really really dislikes Wil Wheaton, and the entire world must know. Comments can be left below.

Good discussion; I wanted to mention that I like the first book of the Sword of Truth series, Wizard’s First Rule. I find it to be pretty much a standard S&S book but it has some pretty clever parts to it and I enjoy it enough to reread it on occasion. I say this as a Democratic Socialist; I absolutely agree that it is a mix of Tolkien and Ayn Rand, but I think it is alright because a fantasy setting is the only place where that ideology works. It is similar to liking Conan material while acknowledging that it would be horrific in the real world.
On that subject, are you all going to do an episode on the big doorstop book series? Specifically the ones like Wheel of Time and Sword of Truth et al? I think that Tolkien and A Song of Ice and Fire can be separated out of this subject since they are largely their own things; Tolkien’s work is obviously its own subject and ASoIaF is pretty multimedia at this point, making it its own tent topic.
Keep up the great work!
‘Azumanga Daioh’ is wonderful. If you are getting swamped by horror, it’s a wonderful palate-cleanser. Kiyohiko Azuma’s other series ‘Yotsuba &!’ is even MORE wholesome and whimsical.
