For Our 5th Anniversary: Announcing Terminator Month!

Duh-dun dun duh DUH!!

January 2018 is the fifth anniversary of Radio vs. the Martians! and we’re doing something big.

This January, we’re launching what we’re calling Terminator Month! We’ll highlighting all four of the Schwarzenegger-led films in the science fiction/horror franchise franchise that made him a household name: Terminator.

Every Sunday in the month of January, we’ll be back with a new episode of our Arnold Schwarzenegger podcast celebration, Podcasta la Vista, Baby!

  • January 7th: The Terminator with Matt Goodman
  • January 14th: Terminator 2: Judgment Day with Joe Preti
  • January 21st: Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines with Dave Brouillette
  • January 28th: Terminator: Genisys with Sam Mulvey

It will be a month of explosions, time travel, post-apocalyptic wastelands, killer robots, helicopter crashes, catch phrases, murder, catch phrases and total vehicular mayhem!

So, come with us if you want to live!

Be There and Be Square!

We’re Building Our Own Recording Studio!

We’ve hit that point in our show’s life cycle that it’s time for us to stretch our wings!

For the last four and a half years, we’ve recorded with the support of friends with professional equipment and studios, like Rich Lyons, Jeremy Whitman and especially the supremely generous Sam Mulvey.

Our fans have already been awesome with their support for us on Patreon, but audio equipment is expensive. When the Elwood Blues said that he’d traded in their car for a microphone, that was hardly an exaggeration.

With your help, our show is now able to pay for its own graphic art, web hosting and even bought us an awesome Rob Kelly-designed banner for the next Captain Picard Day celebration at the end of the year!

Now help us go super saiyan!

We’re looking to buy microphones, mic stands, an audio mixing board, a decent laptop to record on, sound proofing foam for the walls, chairs that don’t squeak and a good solid table. This will probably run us a few thousand dollars, something a bit out of our current budget range.

Help us make our dreams a reality! Click the Support Us on PayPal button on our front page, and kick in a little dough. If you like what we do, and would like to give us more flexibility and independence to make more of it, then please consider helping us out.

Mike Makes a Guest Appearance on the Sci Fi Nomads Podcast!

Mike sits in with Lauren Studley and Dustin Williams of the Sci Fi Nomads podcast to talk about all things Predator!

From the creatures’ roots in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic to their battles with everyone from Danny Glover, Adrien Brody, and even the Alien xenomorphs, we dig into all aspects of franchise.

Are the Predators really the galaxy’s greatest warriors, or just a bunch of rich assholes with expensive hunting gear? Do the sequels hold a candle to the original? Are the Alien vs. Predator crossover film worth watching?

Because Sometimes Life Happens

As the title of this post implies, the complications of life sometimes drive us to make adjustments. Well, life happens.

Oh, don’t worry. Nobody is dying. Nothing is on fire. Nothing is fucked.

But we’ve found that with the growing complications of adult life, it can be a lot more difficult to spend a couple months trying to consume all the media you can find about a pop culture topic like Batman or Star Trek, composing our thoughts in interesting and funny ways, and producing a 90+ minute podcast about it.

We don’t say it a lot, but it’s a lot of work. It’s work we adore, but work nonetheless.

Sometimes it means months of prep work and dozens of hours of writing and research going into our full panel discussion episodes. And it’s time we simply don’t have to produce the panels as frequently as we’d like.

First, the bad news is that for the time being, you won’t see nearly as many full panel episodes of Radio vs. the Martians! as you’ve grown accustomed to.

Starting this month, we will produce approximately three panel episodes a year. We’re going to make them count, and make them good.

Now, the good news is that our monthly “Fun Size” episodes are going nowhere. We will continue to put them out as scheduled in the last week or so of every month.

What this means that you will see a lot more episodes of our sister podcasts Podcasta la Vista, Baby! and Hex & Violence to fill up our dance cards.

For most of the year, expect those two shows to alternate from month to month, only to be interrupted tri-annually for a full panel episode in the classic style.

So, breathe and relax. We’re not going anywhere. Some things are going slower. Some things are speeding up. And at the beginning of next year, expect one giant surprise we can’t wait to share with you.

Thanks for sticking with us, listeners. We’ll make it worth your while!

Mike Makes an Appearance on the Hands Free Football Podcast!

Even though he knows next to nothing about sports, our good friends Dave and Carol Brouillette have invited Mike to join them on their Hands Free Football podcast!

Mike mostly asks questions about the game, and test the limits of the hosts’ Seattle Sounders fandom with weird hypotheticals. And finally, we talk about a 1981 soccer movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Pele…where they do battle with Nazis.

Really?

Mike Makes an Appearance on the View from the Gutters Podcast!

Mike sits in with the folks from the View from the Gutters comic book podcast to dig into the first two volumes of Image Comics’ latest series by Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey, and Jordie Bellaire: Injection.

When a secret think tank made up of two scientists, a detective, a super spy and a wizard-in-denial crunch the numbers and see that imagination, innovation and human advancement is heading toward stagnation, they take a radical step to fix it, and in their hubris, may have irrevocably broken the universe.

It’s got super science, malevolent pixies, ancient folklore, feral artificial intelligences, human ham sandwiches, gun battles and some of the most wonderfully biting and funny dialogue around.

Mike Returns to the Secret Origins Podcast!

riddlercoverMike is back on the Secret Origins Podcast to talk with host Ryan Daly about one of a trio of Batman’s iconic villains: the punctuation-garbed Riddler!

The Riddler has appeared in comic books, television, animation and feature films. He’s one of the Dark Knight’s most recognizable foes, yet one of the least consistently defined, being depicted as both a manic mentally unstable puzzler, and a cold mercenary thief with a penchant for matching wits with Batman.

They get into the history of the character in his many incarnations, including his kinda-sorta-but-not-really origins as depicted in DC Comics’ Secret Origins Special #1 from 1989.

Mike Makes a Return to the Film and Water Podcast!

planet-of-the-apes-classic-01

Mike makes his fifth appearance on Rob Kelly‘s Film and Water Podcast, this time to talk about his favorite movie of all time, 1968’s Planet of the Apes.

Loosely based on a novel by Pierre Boulle, this science fiction masterpiece follows a cynical astronaut, played by Charlton Heston, who finds himself stranded on a planet where talking apes rule, and a species of mute, brutish humans are hunted for sport and scientific experimentation.

Mike dives into why this film will forever be his favorite, and how it successfully checks off all of his favorite things — from time travel to courtroom drama to gorillas with rifles — into a timeless piece of cinema.

Casey Returns to the Video Game Break Podcast!

videogame

Casey makes his third appearance on Carlos Rodela‘s Video Game Break Podcast!

They dig into everything from the Twilight Zone, Bioshock, baffling game dialogue, Pokémon Go, and the new/old Doom. And then they tuck into the main course: Game Emulation!

Often demonized as piracy, video game emulators, Casey argues, make decades-old games available to new players that can’t normally buy them.

Mike Appears on the Justice League International: Bwah-Ha-Ha Podcast!

jli

Mike makes no secret of the fact that he’s a superhero fan, and one of his favorite series was Justice League International, the 1980s incarnation of DC Comics’ premier superhero team. A stark contrast to a lot of the grimness and grittiness that was popular at the time, JLI was a light-hearted and character-centric book starring a collection of second and third tier characters like Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Guy Gardner, Martian Manhunter, and Mr. Miracle.

Mike was very happy to make a guest appearance on “the Irredeemable” Shagg MatthewsJustice League International: Bwah-Ha-Ha Podcast! We dig into the fourth issue of the series from 1987, which introduced Booster Gold to the team’s roster.
